2008 NAFEPA Scholarship Recipients
Stanley McFarland Scholarship - Kayla Calisto, Interlachen, Florida;
Music Education
Kayla, a senior at Interlochen High School, has a 3.5 GPA, is ranked 20th in her
class of 190 students, and took 12 college credit hours per semester at her high
school. She is the drum major in her high school band and has won many awards.
Kayla is a member of the National Honors Society, National Honor Roll, and Phi
Theta Kappa honors group. Even though she is very busy with her school work, she
still works a 15 hour week part-time job. Kayla’s future plan is to become a
music teacher. She feels that becoming a music teacher is following a passion
that she cannot wait to start.
John A. Pfaff Scholarship - Raul Hernandez, Wilmington, California;
Biology
Raul Hernandez is a freshman at UCLA in Los Angeles where he has a 3.5 GPA. He
volunteers at local elementary schools and tutors kindergarten students. During
high school, he was an active member in the HEALS clinic in his community, the
Spanish Club, and National Youth Leadership Forum of Medicine. Raul’s goals are
to pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UCLA, and then enroll in medical
school to become a pediatrician. Raul wants to help children in his community
who do not have financial capabilities to receive medical treatment.
Iva McCants Scholarship - Anchau Bui, St. Cloud, Minnesota; Dentistry
Anchau Bui is a senior at Apollo High School where she has a 4.07 GPA and is
ranked 11th in her class of 296. She is the president of the Cultural Awareness
Race Education Club as well as treasurer for the Vietnamese Dance Community.
Anchau is a member of the National Honors Society and volunteers at the St.
Cloud Hospital. She came to America with her family from Vietnam when she was
nine years old, and she is grateful to be in America because she believes that
she would never have this opportunity for education in Vietnam. Anchau has been
accepted at the College of St. Benedict where her goal is to become a dentist.
